Serengeti to Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park are two of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations, and many visitors wonder about the distance between them. The drive from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater typically takes around 3 to 4 hours, covering a distance of approximately 140 to 200 kilometers, depending on the specific route and road conditions. While this is a relatively short drive, it offers incredible views of the Tanzanian landscape.

The route between the two National Parks takes you through beautiful highlands, giving you a chance to see different terrains and even more wildlife along the way. Many safari tours offer this as part of a multi-day itinerary, allowing guests to explore both parks in one trip and experience a diverse range of animals and ecosystems.

Coming from the Seronera area in Serengeti, the distance to the crater is about 140km/90mi and the driving time is about 3 hours*. This can obviously take much longer allowing for wildlife viewing along the way. The 80km/50mi drive from Lake Manyara National Park to the crater takes about 2 hours*, and the 180km/110mi drive from Tarangire National Park takes about 4 hours*

YES! To complete the transit, you will need to pay entry fees for both the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, as well as a vehicle transit/entry fee. Confirm with your tour operator that both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are covered in your package.

The roads inside the conservation area are unpaved, bumpy, and occasionally muddy, making a 4×4 mandatory.

Most travelers combine this transfer with a half-day or full-day game drive to view wildlife in the Serengeti plains or the famous Ngorongoro Crater floor.

For a faster trip, you can take a light aircraft flight (1-2 hours) from a Serengeti airstrip (like Seronera) to the Arusha or Kilimanjaro airports, then drive to Ngorongoro, though this skips the scenic land transit.
